School Counseling: Supporting Student Success


The School Counseling department is a vital part of the Student Support Services Division, working to ensure all City Schools of Decatur (CSD) students are safe, seen, and successful. Our dedicated school counselors play a crucial role in fostering the academic, social-emotional, and college/career development of every student.

What We Do:

As part of the broader CSD Student Support Services Division, School Counseling is committed to:

  • Advocating for all students: We work to create a supportive environment where every student feels valued and has the resources they need to succeed.
  • Providing comprehensive support: Our counselors offer a range of services to address the needs of our student population.
  • Collaborating for student well-being: We partner closely with students, families, teachers, administrators, and other support services (including School Psychology, School Social Work, Behavior Intervention, and more) to provide holistic support.
  • Implementing best practices: We utilize established processes and procedures, aligned with state and federal guidelines, to ensure consistent and high-quality support services.
  • Empowering educators: We provide coaching and feedback to teachers and administrators on effective strategies to support all students in the classroom.
  • Building strong partnerships: We actively engage parents and the community to foster meaningful connections that positively impact student achievement and family involvement.
How School Counselors Support Students:

Our school counselors provide a variety of services, including:

  • Individual and group counseling: Addressing social-emotional needs, academic concerns, and personal growth.
  • Academic advising: Guiding students with course selection, goal setting, and academic planning.
  • College and career counseling: Assisting with post-secondary planning, exploring career options, and developing necessary skills.
  • Crisis intervention and support: Providing immediate assistance during challenging situations.
  • Consultation and collaboration: Working with parents, teachers, and other professionals to support student success.
  • Referral to outside resources: Connecting families with community-based services when needed.

School Counselor Referrals

If you are concerned about yourself or someone else, you may complete the general K-12 referral form. The school counselors will review the form and connect the person with the appropriate resources. Students may refer themselves for services or be referred by a friend, teacher, parent or concerned community member. Referrals are anonymous unless the person chooses to identify themselves.
